Mr John Edwin Thomas - Fishguard Peacefully at his home on Thursday 23rd March, John of Penbanc, Fishguard. Dear husband of Rosemary, loving father of Sharon and Wynne, devoted grandfather of Thomas, father-in-law to Martin and brother to Ifor and Catrin. Private funeral service. John Edwin Thomas January 1936 - March 2023.
Former schoolmaster at Maenclochog CP school.
Born in Blackburn, John was raised on the family farm near Sarn Meyllteyrn, Gwynedd with siblings Gwilym, Catrin and Ifor.
Early schooling was at Sarn National School and Botwnnog Grammar, where he proved to be a talented goalkeeper, representing North Wales schools, and a trialist for Wales schoolboys in 1952-53. In later years, he attended many Wrexham fc and Wales matches.
National Service with the Royal Air Force, mainly based at RAF Valley between 1954-57, gaining promotion to the rank of corporal.
Subsequently, served nine years with the then Pembrokeshire Police Force - where he met wife Rosemary whilst on duty in Narberth. Married for 64 years, they had 2 children Wynne and Sharon.
During 1966, John commenced teacher training at Trinity College Carmarthen. He graduated in 1969, and took up a teaching post at Maenclochog CP until 1993, when he retired due to ill health.
Joined the Royal Observer Corps as a volunteer in 1979, becoming Chief Observer of Croesgoch post. He was presented with a long service medal after 12 years, and later a certificate of commendation from the Commandant, ROC.
His hobbies over the years included plane spotting at Brawdy (he could often be found at home listening to aircraft communications on the radio), and watching steam trains - he introduced grandson Thomas to steam trains, now a Doctor of History and researcher at the Railway Museum, York. John was also an avid reader, crossword and sudoku puzzle solver, and spent years setting the monthly crossword for ''Y Llien Gwyn'',
the North Pembrokeshire Welsh language newspaper.
A proud Welshman, he won a limerick prize, ''Limrig Gwylgwaun'' in 1991, the judge being Y Bardd, Dic Jones of Blaenannerch.
Member of Capel Pentowr (MC), Abergwaun.
Rosemary, Wynne, Sharon, Martin and Thomas will miss John greatly, he will be forever in their hearts.
