In Memory of Lt. QM. W. L. AMBROSE Pte. E. FOUNTAIN 1st Essex Regiment My Father was killed with his driver, South of Damascus, 23.6.41. after being strafed by a Vichy French aircraft. Because of the indecisiveness of the French Government at the time the French fought each other in this campaign. They also caused problems for my Wife's Uncle, Jack Evans, Welsh Guards, who fought the rear guard action at Dunkirk. He was captured with 452 others and finished up in a P.O.W. camp in Poland for four years. He was taken out to be shot several times. As the Russians advanced an infamous long march ensued. If you dropped out you were shot. Lack of food forced them to moil like pigs for turnips. I have been to Damascus War Cemetery twice where eight gardeners look after about 11/2 acres. The place is immaculate. It's a deep source of worry to me about the fate of the gardeners, as I see it they were working for me. Years ago I visited a very large field with a village in the distance. I imagined I was standing next to a stocky, dark haired, Welsh man. He had a rucksack at his feet, with no white flag in it. He took a deep breath and pulled back his long bow. The peace Agincourt, death on the wing was setting off. I had some satisfaction there. L.A.
