THE Older People’s Commissioner for Wales visited Pembrokeshire recently to se how over-50s are keeping fit and having fun.
Sarah Rochira joined members of the 50+ Fit Club at Milford Haven Town Hall - which offers gentle exercise and a chance to socialise.
The classes, which are run by Age Cymru Pembrokeshire, were an opportunity for Sarah to speak with older people about the issues that matter most to them.
Sarah then travelled to Age Cymru’s Work of Art Gallery in Haverfordwest - an 'alternative to a charity shop' that was developed through supporting local professional and amateur artists to display and sell their artwork.
It has been hugely successful since opening in 2012, with 11,379 people visiting in the first eight months alone and 29 volunteers running it, helping to generate vital funds to support Age Cymru Pembrokeshire’s work with older people in the area.
After viewing some of the work on display, Sarah also took part in a craft class, funded through the Gwanwyn Festival small grants programme.
“The impact of the wonderful services provided by Age Cymru Pembrokeshire cannot be underestimated," said Sarah.
"As well as providing a number of befriending and support services, groups such as the exercise and craft classes provide an opportunity for older people to keep fit and be creative, while chatting, laughing and socialising.
"“The three things many older people say they want is someone to love, something to do and something to look forward to. It is not about survival, but having a life. The work of Age Cymru Pembrokeshire provides these things to many older people.”
