THE sun shone down on Pembrokeshire on Sunday morning for the annual Western Telegraph Preseli Bluestone Run 2014 in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
The event was organised by Jeff and Sian Edwards, the founders/organisers of the popular Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Run held every September to promote the county and help the BHF.
Jeff said they first organised this event back in 2011 as a “one off” for the BHF's “mending broken hearts” appeal, but due to its breathtaking 55-mile route over the Preseli Hills and around the Bluestone countryside, starting in Milford Haven and terminating in Narberth, it soon became another popular event on Pembrokeshire’s motoring scene.
More than 100 motor cars and motorbike’s lined up at the start line on the seafront at Gelliswick Bay, continuing halfway up the hill.
Vehicles and bikes of all shapes, sizes and ages - from those dating back to the thirties up to eye catching and head turning examples from the 21st century - took part.
"Everyone was there for the same reason - a love of motoring, make new friends and to help the BHF," said Mr Edwards.
Guests on the day included the Mayor of Milford Haven Cllr Eric Harries, chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council Cllr Tom Richards, and their consorts, along with their ladies.
There was also a warm welcome from Jeff and Sian for everyone who took part and a special welcome was extended to cars and members of Lowestoft Classic Vehicle Club who were taking part in a run of their own from the east to the west of the UK to mark the club’s 25th anniversary.
Jeff and the Mayor of Milford Haven were particularly delighted to welcome the club with Milford and Lowestoft being former major fishing ports and tstrong Lowestoft links still in the town.
Before the run, the mayor presented the chairman of Lowestoft Classic Vehicle Club with a Milford Haven Town Council plaque to remind them of a very happy and historic day.
The Lowestoft club went on to hold a photocall in St Davids on the west coast before rejoining the Preseli Bluestone Run later in the day.
The Pembrokeshire flag to start the run was lowered at 11.30am and vehicles left Gelliswick Bay via the Murco Private road courtesy of Murco Oil.
The 55 mile route took in the beautiful Preseli Hills before arriving at a Halfway Stop courtesy of the Dyfed Shire Horse Farm at Eglwyswrw.
"The motoring tour then continued around the beautiful Bluestone countryside passing both the 'rock of boulders' where it is believed the Preseli Bluestone came from that was used in the building of Stonehenge and the monument to Waldo Williams the famous Welsh speaking Pembrokeshire poet."
The run terminated at the Town Moor car park in Narberth, courtesy of Pembrokeshire County County Council.
Sian said: "We are delighted that everyone had such a great time and many more friendships were forged on the day. With Jeff suffering from a serious cardiac illness we are delighted that this now annual event is 'doing its bit' in helping with the advancement in cardiac medication."
The Preseli Bluestone Run 2015 will be held on the second Sunday of June.
In the meantime, the Edwards' next event will be the Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Run which this year takes place on Sunday, September 7.
Grateful thanks go to the following for all their help: the Western Telegraph, British Heart Foundation, Dyfed Shire Horse Farm, Milford Haven Town Council, Pembrokeshire County Council, Milford Haven Police, Murco Oil, Snack Jacks, Amanda Myatt, Noel Robinson and Pete Sharp.
"We couldn’t stage these events without them, and the EVERYONE who took part!" said Jeff.
