MILFORD Haven town council discussed the impending closure of the town’s Barclays bank branch at its Monday night meeting (March 25).
Cllr Eric Harries proposed writing to the firm and asking if they would reconsider the closure, which will take place this summer.
Some members said there was no way of changing the firm’s mind, with Cllr Lynne Turner adding: “I don’t think this council should be getting involved with decisions of national companies.”
But Mayor Rose Gray said the council did write to Lloyds bank when it closed its local branch in 2017.
Cllr Harries said he appreciated customer numbers had dropped in recent years, but did not want Barclays to think people and businesses were happy with the decision.
“As representatives of the people of Milford Haven we should let them know we are very unhappy,” he said.
Cllr Rhys Sinnett said Barclays had not “thought through” how it would provide alternative provision for personal and business customers, whereas Lloyds had provided a mobile bank, which visits Milford Haven three times a week.
Members voted to write to Barclays.
