Children’s university certificates were presented to nearly 50 pupils at a Haverfordwest school recently.
Forty-eight Haverfordwest VC School pupils were awarded bronze, silver and gold certificates for their participation in sports, eco club, media club, lego club and gardening club as well as chess, French, Welsh and drama clubs.
The Children’s University Wales is a national organisation administered by Trinity College, Carmarthen, which works together with Pembrokeshire County Council community focused schools.
It recognises children for out-of-school hours activities such as sport, science engineering and computer clubs. The number of hours in informal learning activity is rewarded with a gold, silver or bronze certificate.
Cabinet member for children and young people, Councillor Huw George, who helped present the certificates, praised the efforts of the children.
“Learning comes in all forms and this is one way in which youngsters can aspire to achieve more, as well as appreciate the rewards of hard work and effort,” he said.
Headteacher Michele Thomas said an extensive programme of activities was offered to pupils at lunchtimes and after school.
“These extra-curricular activities extend and enrich the curriculum and are very popular with all the pupils,” she said.
Mrs Thomas added that it could not be done without the staff and many volunteers who give up their time to run the activities.
