Dear editor, I saw with interest the photo of the Doctor’s Hill in Jeff Dunn’s column last week.
Just to the right at the top of Victoria Hill is Milford House, where Doctor George Griffith lived. He was a native of Poyntz Castle, in Pembrokeshire, and he was educated at Swansea College. At one time he worked in Guy’s Hospital in London before opening a practice in Castle Terrace in Haverfordwest. Subsequently he moved to Milford Haven where he succeeded the late Doctor Field as district medical officer.
He was captain commandant of the volunteer corps for many years. In 1878 he became Justice of the Peace for the county, and he held many public offices including being the first member to represent Milford Haven on the Pembrokeshire County Council and indeed was elected to the chairman of that body.
One of the most esteemed public positions he carried out was a chairman of the Milford County School governors and the Haverfordwest Grammar School governors.
This gentleman was a well known figure in Milford Haven, hence the Doctor’s Hill description. He died on December 16, 1912, aged 74 years.
Incidentally my French friend Nicholas Halford has received his family tree from me and when I send him photo copies of his relatives letters from 1845, he is going to send a cheque to the local Red Cross.
The deal I made is a novel way of fundraising.
