Dear editor, I WAS speaking to a local resident from Havens Head recently who, like many others, is concerned about the state of the marshland situated there.
I went with him to the area to see the situation for myself and it was quite obvious that the silt has fallen over the years into the stream creating more vegetation to expand thus almost touching the banks on either side, as well as proceeding land at the upper reaches where some dwellings are based.
This must be some cause for concern to them. I didn’t see any ducks there, the reason could be that any eggs laid would be subjected to any prey that would be able to reach them.
The necessity to ensure their survival would be for the Docks Company to dredge the present overriding marshland to create an island for the wildlife and at the same time bring about more sustainability to the nestings.
Many years ago in Goose Pill, I worked on a project in the woods and I recall some volunteers creating a safe island for the wildlife there.
Like many good ideas, the plug gets pulled from underneath when things take off. It happened to us, money being the excuse as always.
We weren’t afraid to get our hands dirty, but these schemes start and never seem to finish. Will the Docks Company consider these proposals in the interests of the residents of Liddeston and our environment?
Let us hope that something can be done for the village of Liddeston soon.
